Summer 2026: your guide to La Cala de Mijas beaches
La Cala de Mijas sits on one of the quieter stretches of the Costa del Sol, close enough to Fuengirola and Marbella for day trips, far enough to keep the crowds at bay.
Playa de la Butibamba
The nearest beach to both our apartments. A wide, sandy stretch with calm water and a handful of chiringuitos (beach restaurants) that serve grilled sardines on a stick, the espeto, a Málaga tradition. Parking along the coastal road is free outside July and August; in high season, arrive before 11:00 or walk down from the village.
Playa del Bombo
Just east of La Butibamba, this smaller cove is popular with families. The water is shallow near the shore, and the sand is a mix of golden and coarse. There’s a playground at the top of the beach and a couple of restaurants within walking distance.
Calahonda
A ten-minute drive east towards Marbella. The beach is long and backed by low cliffs with a paseo marítimo (promenade) above. Good snorkelling spots near the rocky sections. The village itself has a small market on Wednesdays.
Practical tips
- Water temperature: 20–24 °C in July and August, pleasant from June through October.
- Sunbeds: €8–12 per set (two beds + parasol) at most chiringuitos. Order a drink and they often include it.
- Parking: Free roadside parking fills up fast in summer. The municipal car park near La Cala centre is €1.50/hour.
- Safety: All listed beaches have lifeguards from mid-June to mid-September. Flags: green = safe, yellow = caution, red = no swimming.
