Het weer in La Cala de Mijas per maand: de beste reistijd voor de Costa del Sol

Sunny beach at La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol

La Cala de Mijas weather is mild all year: daytime highs average 17°C in January and 31 to 32°C in July and August, with the sea at 21 to 23°C from June to September and almost no rain between June and August. The best time to visit depends on what you want: beach from late May to October, golf from October to May, and winter sun from November to February.

La Cala de Mijas weather month by month

La Cala has no official weather station, so the table uses Spanish Met Office (AEMET) climate normals for Málaga Airport, about 30 km east on the same coast. They match La Cala closely, though the village runs a degree or two cooler on summer afternoons thanks to the sea breeze. Sea temperatures are long-term averages for the Málaga coast.

Rain is concentrated between October and April, usually in short, heavy bursts followed by clear skies. November and December are the wettest months; July is effectively rain-free. The sea lags behind the air: still cool in May, still pleasantly warm in October when the crowds have gone.

What each season is good for

Beach season: late May to October. The water is comfortable from June, warmest in August, and still 20°C or more in October. September is our guests’ favourite beach month: the air has lost its August edge, the sea is at its best and the chiringuitos are calmer. Our summer beach guide covers the beaches within walking distance of our apartments.

Golf season: October to May. Daytime highs of 17 to 25°C and long stretches of clear weather make autumn, winter and spring ideal for 18 holes. Summer golf means early tee times and a lot of water. The three courses are compared in our La Cala Golf Resort guide, and in late November 2026 the resort hosts the Ladies European Tour season finale, the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, on Campo Europa (Pro-Am 24 and 25 November, tournament 26 to 29 November).

Hiking and day trips: March to May and October to November. The Sierra de Mijas trails and the walk through Mijas Pueblo are far more enjoyable at 20°C than at 32°C. Almond blossom in February, wildflowers in April and clear mountain views in October are the highlights. See our Mijas Pueblo day trip for ideas.

Winter sun and long stays: November to February. Expect T-shirt weather at lunchtime most days, jumper weather in the evenings, and a few wet spells that pass quickly. Many of our guests stay four to eight weeks in winter, when the village feels most like a real Spanish town.

Is it really 320 sunny days a year?

The “320 days of sunshine” line appears on almost every Costa del Sol website. It is a marketing figure, not a measurement. AEMET records around 2,900 hours of sunshine a year for Málaga, about 8 hours a day on average, with roughly 110 days of unbroken sun, 200 days of sun with some cloud and about 50 overcast days. So you can plan outdoor days in any month, but a week in December may include a couple of grey ones.

When it is busiest and priciest

  • July and August: peak season. Beaches, restaurants and seafront parking fill up and prices are highest. The Feria de La Cala, the village fair, runs in late July (21 to 26 July in 2026) with concerts and a daytime feria at the Torreón.
  • Noche de San Juan, 23 June: bonfires and music on La Cala beach, with the traditional midnight jump over the waves. Book early for it.
  • Semana Santa (Holy Week): 29 March to 5 April in 2026. Spanish families travel, processions fill Málaga and Mijas Pueblo, and prices rise.
  • Christmas and New Year: popular with northern Europeans escaping winter; the two weeks around 25 December book up early.
  • Quiet and good value: mid-January to mid-March, and November outside the golf tournament week.

The winds: Levante, Poniente and Terral

The Costa del Sol has three named winds, and locals discuss them the way other people discuss rain.

  • Poniente blows from the west, off the Atlantic. In summer it is the cooling afternoon breeze that makes 31°C comfortable on the beach; in winter it brings most of the rain.
  • Levante blows from the east, mostly between May and October. It is warmer and more humid, can make the sea choppy for a day or two, and sometimes brings haze.
  • Terral is the hot, dry wind from the interior. It arrives a handful of times each summer, pushing Málaga past 35°C for a day or two before the sea breeze returns. On a terral day, pool in the morning, shade in the afternoon.

None of these are a reason to change your dates; they just explain why one summer day can feel very different from the next.

What to pack per season

Season Pack
Summer (June to September) Light clothes, hat, high-factor sunscreen, a light layer for air-conditioned restaurants, beach shoes for the pebbly stretches
Spring and autumn (March to May, October to November) Layers, one warm jumper, light rain jacket, walking shoes, swimwear from May and through October
Winter (December to February) Jeans and jumpers, a proper jacket for evenings, sunglasses (the low sun is bright), golf gear if you play

One tip: Spanish apartments are built to stay cool, so January evenings indoors can feel chillier than the thermometer suggests. A warm layer for the terrace after sunset is always welcome.

Staying nearby

For golf trips and family holidays in the resort, Apartment Harmony in La Cala Golf is a penthouse that sleeps six, with the three courses on the doorstep. For beach weeks, Oasys de Ipanema sleeps four, a short walk from the sand and the village restaurants. Whichever season suits you, book direct and save 10%.
