Heb je een auto nodig in La Cala de Mijas? Een eerlijke gids voor onze twee appartementen

The seafront promenade and beach at La Cala de Mijas

Do you need a car in La Cala de Mijas? It depends where you sleep. At Apartment Harmony in La Cala Golf, 5 to 7 km up in the hills, yes: hire one. At Oasys de Ipanema, a few minutes’ walk from the beach and village, you can manage a full week on foot, the M-220 bus and the odd taxi.

We get asked about car hire in La Cala de Mijas more than almost anything else, so here is the honest answer, apartment by apartment.

Apartment Harmony in La Cala Golf: hire a car

Our penthouse sits inside La Cala Resort, which is lovely precisely because it is up in the hills among three golf courses and pine forest. The flip side is that the beach, the village and the supermarkets are all a drive away. The resort quotes about 10 minutes to the beach, 20 to Marbella and 30 to Málaga airport, and that matches our experience.

There is no regular public bus into the resort, and walking down to the village is not realistic with shopping bags or children. Taxis will come up, but you pay for the hill both ways.

What a car unlocks from Harmony:

  • The beach: Playa de La Cala and the whole promenade, 10 minutes away.
  • Supermarkets: the big supermarkets down on the coast road, rather than the small resort shop.
  • Golf: hop between Campo América, Campo Asia and Campo Europa, and Calanova or Mijas Golf nearby. See our guide to the three courses.
  • Day trips: Mijas Pueblo, Ronda, Caminito del Rey, Marbella, Málaga city.

Oasys de Ipanema: you can skip the car

Oasys de Ipanema is a different story. From the door you walk to the beach, the promenade, the bakery, the pharmacy and a dozen restaurants without crossing anything wider than a village street. La Cala de Mijas is compact and flat along the seafront, so our beach guests rarely miss a car.

What is walkable from Ipanema:

  • The beach and Paseo Marítimo: a long, flat promenade lined with chiringuitos.
  • Restaurants and bars: our eating out guide is written for people on foot.
  • The Wednesday and Saturday market: held at the fairground next to the A-7, roughly 9:00 to 14:00. Over a hundred stalls of fruit, cheese, leather, clothes and household bits.
  • Supermarkets: a Mercadona and smaller shops within a short walk.
  • The Torreón and the Senda Litoral: the coastal path that runs along the sea in both directions.

For anything beyond the village, the bus does most of the work.

Getting around without a car: bus, train and taxi

Bus M-220 (Avanza). This is the workhorse of the coast. It runs half-hourly between Marbella and Fuengirola and stops in La Cala de Mijas, so you can be on Fuengirola’s beach or in Marbella’s old town in 25 to 40 minutes. From Marbella, the first bus is around 06:35 and the last around 22:30 (21:50 on Sundays). Buy your ticket from the driver with cash (no cards, notes up to 20 euros). Check the current timetable at malaga.avanzagrupo.com or the CTMAM site before you travel, as it changes with the season.

Train from Fuengirola. Fuengirola is the end of the Cercanías C1 line, which reaches Málaga airport in about 34 minutes and the city centre in about 45. Trains run every 20 to 30 minutes. Bus to Fuengirola, then train, is a comfortable car-free route to both the airport and Málaga.

Taxis. Taxis are easy to find in the village, and in summer you will usually see one waiting on the main road. A pre-booked airport transfer to La Cala de Mijas is typically quoted at 40 to 50 euros for a standard car, 25 to 30 minutes door to door. Ask us for the numbers we use ourselves.

Mijas Pueblo without a car: possible but fiddly. No bus runs directly from La Cala; take the M-220 to Fuengirola, then the M-112 up the hill. Our Mijas Pueblo day trip has the details.

What car hire at Málaga airport costs in 2026

Prices swing a lot by season and supplier, so treat these as bands, not quotes. Local companies based just outside the terminal are generally cheaper than the big on-airport brands.

Season Small car, local supplier (per week) Typical compact, major brand (per day)
November to March from about 120 to 130 euros 20 to 30 euros
April to June, October from about 140 to 150 euros 25 to 40 euros
Easter and September from about 160 to 170 euros 30 to 45 euros
July and August often 250 euros and up 35 to 50 euros and up

Add fuel, optional excess cover and a second driver, and a shoulder-season week with a small car lands around 200 to 300 euros all in. Book early for July and August; supply genuinely runs out. Check the fuel policy (full to full is fairest) and bring a credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit.

Parking at both apartments

Both apartments come with a reserved indoor space, which matters in August when the village car parks fill by mid-morning.

  • Apartment Harmony, La Cala Golf: spaces 2 and 3 in the underground garage, so two cars fit if you arrive as two families.
  • Oasys de Ipanema: space 19 in the residents’ garage, a short walk from the front door.

Decision table: car or no car?

Your trip Apartment Harmony (La Cala Golf) Oasys de Ipanema (beach)
Beach week, staying local Car No car needed
Golf holiday Car Car (courses are inland)
Couples’ long weekend Car No car needed
Family with young children Car Optional, bus works
Day trips to Ronda, Caminito del Rey, Mijas Pueblo Car Car, or book a tour
Winter long stay Car Optional, hire by the week when needed

Ronda is about 80 km and 1 hour 25 minutes by road. Caminito del Rey is about 60 km and 1 hour 10 minutes, and its timed tickets mean you want your own wheels. Mijas Pueblo is 15 minutes up the A-387 from La Cala.

Staying nearby

If you love the idea of waking up above the fairways, Apartment Harmony in La Cala Golf sleeps six and comes with two garage spaces for the car you will want. If you would rather leave the keys at home, Oasys de Ipanema sleeps four and puts the beach, the market and the bus stop within a few minutes’ walk. Either way, book direct and save 10%. For a beach-first itinerary, our summer beach guide is the natural next read.

Frequently asked questions

Is car hire in La Cala de Mijas really necessary at La Cala Golf?

Yes, for almost everyone. The resort is 5 to 7 km uphill from the beach and village with no regular bus service, and taxis each way add up quickly.

Can I get from Málaga airport to La Cala de Mijas without a car?

Yes. Take the Cercanías C1 train to Fuengirola (about 34 minutes), then the M-220 bus to La Cala de Mijas. Or pre-book a transfer for roughly 40 to 50 euros, 25 to 30 minutes door to door.

Does the M-220 bus stop in La Cala de Mijas?

It does, on the main road through the village, in both directions. Buses run about every 30 minutes between Fuengirola and Marbella. Pay the driver in cash.

Is parking included at both apartments?

Yes. Apartment Harmony has reserved spaces 2 and 3 in the resort garage, and Oasys de Ipanema has space 19 in the residents’ garage. Both are indoor and free for guests.

Can I hire a car for just a few days mid-stay?

Yes. Several suppliers deliver to La Cala or you can collect in Fuengirola. Many Ipanema guests go car-free for beach days and hire for two or three days of exploring.
